Starfucker, or STRFKR, hail from Portland, Oregon. They have been known by several names, have settled on the Starfucker moniker, and are generally about the business of becoming stars themselves.
Starfucker is comprised of the multi-instrumentalists, Joshua Hodges, Shawn Glassford, Keil Corcoran, and Patrick Morris. Delving into differing roles, and taking them seriously is why this band has been able to do what they do, so very well. At times the genre of dance pop, though enjoyable, can also be easily forgettable. Not so with this group of artists.
Instead they offer forth tracks that are at times mesmerizing, captivating, and complex. Coupled with synthetic electronica, and fused with a hint of disco, these tunes are a true testament to the potential longevity of a truly formidable force.
It takes growth, stamina, and determination to prove oneself worthy of a band name that might not be printable in some regions. Since the release of their first self-titled album, and the musical gems it contained (“Julius” and “Bury Us Alive”), the band has continued to improve on their already strong beginnings. Their sophomore release, “Reptilians,” demonstrated that time and experience can be the best tool in delivering an evolution of sound. And finally, with their soon-to-be-released album “Miracle Mile,” comes an even greater and mature sound that is a great example of how far this band will go.
“While I’m Alive,” the first track off of “Miracle Mile,” is less ethereal and more grounded in a bit of funk, and a touch of soul, that speaks to the history and the roots of the electronic scene. Also, yet another example of how the group has taken their skills to a deeper level. By building on a strong past, infusing it with the present, and creating their own destiny, Starfucker is the future sound and a star that is rising. CHAD R. MITCHELL
Before you continue, go listen. Stop what you are doing and spend some time getting acquainted with Mikey Maramag. He is the mastermind otherwise known as Blackbird Blackbird. He is the musician who spins visions of synthetic pop wrapped in a daydream. Does that description sound vague and surreal? Don’t let the doubt dissuade you from experiencing the original sounds of his first full EP “Summer Sounds.” It is a fantastic debut from this San Francisco native, and one that builds upon the original mixes that make up the rest of this talented DJ’s catalog.
